Finnish collectors are now hunting for treasures from the 1980s
Finnish collectors are now hunting for treasures from the 1980s: “Kissankello” lamps are in demand.
Summer is the time for antique fairs and flea markets. Currently, colored vases from Riihimäki glass and 1980s Arabia dishes are among the sought-after items.
This summer, collectors of old items have gathered at the Billnäs and Fiskars antique fairs.
Despite the name, there are fewer antique furniture and items at the fairs. Nowadays, buyers are more interested in items from past decades.
What items are now being sought after at the sales tables.
1980s Arabia dishes
Today, old dishes are meant to be used. They are no longer kept in display cabinets as decorations. Therefore, 1980s Arabia dishes are especially in demand. For young buyers, the ’80s are already considered old and nostalgic.
Currently, popular Arabia dish series include Koralli, Paju, Tunturi, and the slightly more festive Valencia.
Valencia, designed by Ulla Procopé (1921–1968), was introduced in the 1960s. The cobalt blue decorative patterns were hand-painted, making each dish unique. In addition to the designer’s initials, the bottom of the dishes may also bear the signature of the porcelain painter.
Valencia became so popular that it remained in production until 2002, when Arabia ceased making hand-painted dishes.
Colored vases from Riihimäki glass
Colored vases have long interested collectors. Helena Tynell’s (1918–2016) “Aurinkopullo” (Sun Bottle) vases are always desired, but currently, “Pala” vases are in particular demand. They come in various colors, including clear.
Designers like Tamara Aladin (1932–2019) and Aimo Okkolin (1917–1982) created several different vases for Riihimäki glass. Collectors are interested in their Carmen, Tuulikki, and Stromboli vases, among others.
Wristwatches
Grandfather clocks are a thing of the past. Now, wristwatches are in vogue.
Especially young men collect wristwatches. Specific brands and models are of interest. The watches don’t even have to be old. It’s important that they work and can be worn. Wristwatches can be quite expensive.
According to Kari Lähteinen, the event organizer of the Billnäs antique fair, wristwatch collectors even gather to compare their watches and discuss them.
Rattan furniture
Heavy antique furniture doesn’t sell well anymore. Nowadays, people want lighter pieces.
Different types of rattan furniture are now selling like hotcakes. Chairs, armchairs, and plant stands made of rattan are particularly popular with buyers.
Versatile rattan is bought for both balconies and cottages. Even larger chairs can be carried home under the arm.
Alvar Aalto furniture
Furniture and lamps designed by Alvar Aalto (1898–1976) have maintained their popularity through the decades.
Many people strive to decorate their entire homes with Aalto’s items. His furniture has retained its value, and especially his lamps are highly priced.
The three-legged stool is currently one of the most sought-after Aalto furniture pieces, as it doesn’t cost a fortune and is a handy seat for small spaces.
Design lamps
Following the popularity of lamps by Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) and Lisa Johansson-Pape (1907–1989), other vintage lamps have also grown in popularity. Tynell’s lamps are well-known, and finding “bargains” is no longer possible. Considerable sums are paid for Tynell and Johansson-Pape lamps at auctions.
Currently, 1980s “Kissankello” lamps are particularly desired, especially among young people. The older buyer demographic has yet to be convinced of their charm.
Ryijy rugs
Previously, ryijy rugs hung only on grandma’s walls. Nowadays, they can be found especially in young people’s homes.
Ryijy rugs create a cozy atmosphere with their softness and bring color to the decor.
Well-maintained and clean ryijy rugs are in demand. Rugs designed by well-known designers can be quite expensive.
